Trends – What’s Hot

Dan Ryan is a Melbourne based stylist who has worked with the biggest celebrities and on some stunning campaigns in menswear, both internationally and locally here in Australia. We asked Dan to provide a glimpse of what is shown on the red carpet this season that is bound to have an effect on wedding fashion over the next few months.

At the Oscars you will be seeing a lot of cigarette tuxedo pants and large bow ties- all influenced by 1950s – 1960s Hollywood Glamour. This style lends itself to using the tuxedo as separates; a great black pencil pant can look amazing this summer with a sandal and a T-shirt.

Team your Zenetti Tuxedo jacket with your favourite blue jeans and sand shoes. Don’t be afraid this season to embrace the “Dandy” style of dressing… It’s time to accessorise so have fun with bright check bow ties, coloured braces and hats.
Hanks: be brave and clash your must have Zenetti Leopard print hank with your bold bow tie. Don’t be afraid to do a fabulous sock with your favourite loafer, as pants are a little shorter this season.

THE FABRIC / SUIT CLOTH

As fashion has returned to the classics with three-piece suits and tuxedo jackets, then it should come as no surprise that classic cloths, patterns and fabrics are those most sought after.
The Ferrari collection focuses each year on fashion-right classic cloths, allowing for colour matching to your favourite statement pieces in your accessories, shirting and neckwear.

WHAT FABRIC / CLOTH SHOULD I PICK?

A suit is an investment and the single biggest factor in the cost of the suit is the fabric, here are some quick notes to help you choose what’s right for you.

WOOL

Wool is the clear favourite of suit designers, and a vast majority will be either 100% wool or wool blends in Australia. But be careful in your selection, sometimes the blends are of cheap quality and will deteriorate within a few dry-cleans. Thread count plays an important role – the higher the thread count the better the quality, feel and hanging appeal. If the budget allows for it aim for Super fine wools with thread counts in the 100’s – where Super 140, 150 and up to 180’s are usually luxury pieces and worth every bit of the investment.

COTTON

Cotton fabric base make great suits, but be aware that cotton will crease and as such its better reserved for a casual or fashion suit. Great for summer and light casual affairs, not adequate for corporate, formal or everyday suits.

LINEN

Linen, like cotton, is a crushable fabric and reserved for the casual look. But on hot warm nights/days, a linen jacket is a great alternative to cotton over an open neck shirt.

VELVET

Every man ought to have a statement jacket in their wardrobe – a jacket made from a material that is itself the attention grabbing detail. The most on-trend cloth is Velvet and makes a stunning statement piece be it formalwear such as a tuxedo jacket, or even a sports jacket alternative over jeans. Velvet is a luxury every man should own!

Bow Ties

TIE A BOW

Some classics never go out of style. The bowtie is definitely a classic, always the sophisticated choice to wear with a tuxedo. But as with many classics, some years are better than others! This year, the bowtie is back with a vengeance! It is mainstream, trendy and hip thanks to our celebrity friends, from Eddie Murphy to Ryan Gosling, from Clint Eastwood to JayZ and Will Smith, the old school bowtie is on trend! For the groom, the bowtie remains a true classic look.

Once you’ve decided to “go the bow” there are many ways to wear it – here are a few to try:

Butterfly

Classic tightened centre with flared triangular wings… this style can change in proportion to meet your facial features, either wrapped tight for skinnier or smaller framed person, or volumized for those who want more size to showcase.

Batwing

This is a much more linear look than the classic butterfly, nonetheless is a very contemporary shape recognisable by its slim blocky square end that slightly curve to meet for a bow in the middle.

Hank Style

HANK IN POCKET

Try to add a ‘little’ style to your next occasion. The pocket hank is the most overlooked accessory and often marks the difference between a nice look and a perfect look! It is not meant to be a flower substitute, so avoid scrunching it, and instead quarter the fabric to show just a sliver from your chest pocket.
